The Detroit Lions Still Have The Money To Make Moves This Offseason
According to Over The Cap, the Detroit Lions still have $28M in cap space to play with this offseason. By backloading deals for Trey Flowers, Justin Coleman, and Jesse James; the Lions have given themselves the option to pick up a few more playmakers this offseason. These players aren’t top shelf but can offer some quality depth/snaps in the 2019 season.
Spencer Ware – Ware has already been linked with the Detroit Lions when he visited on March 18th. Last season he averaged 4.8 YPC as a rotational back and was a capable receiver out of the backfield. He only has one season of over 100 touches making him a safe option this free agency. He should be a relatively cheap option that the Lions could rely on if they lose starter Kerryon Johnson to injury.
T.J. Yeldon – In his time at Jacksonville, Yeldon has proved he can be a solid number two back. Averaging 4.0 YPC on the ground and proving to be a reliable receiver with 8.9 Yds per catch with four TDs, Yeldon can do a little bit of everything. He shouldn’t demand too much money because of his running back two status.
Jay Ajayi – Perhaps the most unlikely of the halfbacks left on the market to come to Detroit, Jay Ajayi has starting halfback potential. Coming off injury, Ajayi is a very talented running back who has started for two teams, the Eagles and Dolphins, and could possibly work out a one-year deal with the Lions.
Jamie Collins – Former New England players have been finding their way to the Detroit Lions since GM Bob Quinn and HC Matt Patrica have taken over, but is Collins a possibility to join the Lions? In 2016, he was traded from the Patriots to the Browns. Most can only speculate why this happened, but Collins is a good linebacker who turns 30 this season. He clearly wasn’t worth his contracted $ 10.5M, since no one would trade the Browns for him, but could be a valuable piece around $5M.
Muhammad Wilkerson – Let me start this off with the fact that this is not the Muhammad Wilkerson you remember with the New York Jets. He could be an interesting rotational guy, but he would have to be on an incentive-based deal. He’s coming off a major injury and only played three games last year.
Tre Boston -This is a do-it-all safety. Boston can play high, in the box, and is just that flexible piece that HC Matt Patricia is looking for in his defense. He put together another solid campaign with the Arizona Cardinals, his third team in as many years. The Lions have shown they’ll pay for good defensive backs this offseason. Will Boston be the next?
Ndamukong Suh – A Detroit Lions fan’s favorite fantasy, the prodigal son’s triumphant return. He generates consistent pressure up the middle, something the Lions lacked last season. He commanded $14M from the Rams last season and he probably won’t take much of a pay cut this season. Probably in the ballpark of $10-$12M.
