In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case are joined by Jeff ‘the Riz’ Risdon to break down the latest Detroit Lions Free Agency News, Salary Cap Status, and of course how all that might affect the team’s draft. We end the show with one of our favorite guests, Dean Blandino to discuss the upcoming league meetings, Lions insider info, and an amazing announcement.
We start off with what’s turning into a new weekly segment, “Riz was wrong!” and talk about the fact that we mistimed recording the show last week and found out the Frank Gore signing information was all wrong about 5 minutes after we wrapped up recording. Also, we talk about all of the reasons that the Riz thought Legarrette Blount wouldn’t sign with the Detroit Lions… Ooof.
After eating our fair-sized serving of crow, we move ahead and look at what *really* happened this past week in Free Agency including Riz’s favorite signing, Legarrette Blount (ed: ok, I’m teasing him still). We touch on the signings of Zach Zenner, Luke Willson, Nevin Lawson, Sly Williams, Don Muhlbach as well as what each of these guys bring to the Lions and how they fit. We also spend a few minutes discussing Kerry Hyder‘s return and what he might have left after last years’ frustrating Achilles injury.
Once we clear the Free Agency news, we talk Salary Cap and what kind of space the Lions have left. We also look at what they might do with it, and who they might do it with (hubba hubba).
All that being done, we talk about what all of this might mean for the Lions Draft strategy. Here’s a hint, they aren’t likely drafting for 2018… Fear not, we’ll have a fun 2018, but its likely 2019 and 2020 will deliver Lions teams the likes of which most Lions fans haven’t seen in their lives.
From there we welcome former VP of Officiating for the NFL and current Rules Analyst for Fox Sports, Dean Blandino to the Detroit Lions Podcast. Dean is no Eric Ebron, he doesn’t take plays off, he brings it this week with a bunch of inside info about the NFL League meetings, great historical stories of things that have happened at previous meetings, and an inside look at the process. He breaks down a few of the proposed rule changes, why they may or may not be good ideas, and how he thinks the owners will vote on them. After that he brings some Lions insider info about Martha Ford, Bob Quinn, and Matt Patricia. These are stories you haven’t heard before, and they all will build a ton of confidence in the folks running this team. They’ll likely bring a bunch of laughs as well. You’ll feel great about this team after this interview.
Then, we’ll make a pretty big announcement – one that we think you’ll be pretty amazed by. This is a great show, do not miss this!
